1. Structured Group Discussion
The topic is given to the team members and the time frame is allotted to the team members wherein they come and present the GD. This is commonly followed technique.
2. Unstructured Group Discussion
In this type candidates decides the topic and present with the mutual consent. This can be fruitful or even it can kill the time also. Because, sometimes they would have selected irrelevant topics so to avoid problems in unstructured discussions you can verify the topics before they present those.
3. Role Play
Its a unique way of enhancing skills. The candidates are given specific roles to play in backdrop of a given situation. This kind of discussion helps in enhancing problem solving skills.Based on Nature of Topic
Group discussions can be categorized based on the topic allotted for the discussion.
Controversial Topics – This type of GD will be very engaging, entertaining and you will explore the hidden talents of your team members. Because all it sparks with the counter arguments, lively arguments, and this gives a better understanding on employees to the managers as where’s the strength hidden.
Abstract Topics – Its trending nowadays because the topic would be vague or unclear. These kind of discussions helps in evaluating the creative efficiency of the team members. These kinds of discussions hold good in the industries such as Designing, Researching Industry, Website Designing and many more.
Case Study Topics – In this discussion situation is provided to the candidates which would depict the problems which would arise or which we have already faced in our industry. Participants need to analyse the situation and think of various alternatives to solve the problem. Case study GD tests the ability of the candidates to think of solutions keeping the situational factors and constraints in mind.
Now you might be thinking how can we conduct GD’s in spite of busy schedules. As an entrepreneur, you might be running a small or larger organizations. Group discussions really helps in organizational success. You can have a time either weekly once or 2 weeks once on weekends like Saturday to refresh the team and make them engage with other team members. We conducted close to 15 GD’s and could see the employee thinking abilities were enhanced, they became problem solvers, they started to analyse the situations differently, communication improved, a slight gap between team mates was reduced and they started to think on the topics and discuss even during the break.
